  • Description

The dissolution of the Italian parliament, formally carried out by President Giovanni Leone on Saturday (1 May), has paved the way for early elections in June.

Political observers say the election could result with the Italian Communist Party coming to power.

The formal presidential act followed a month long political crisis which started with a parliamentary row on abortion reform and ended with the resignation on Friday night (30 April) of Premier Aldo Moro's eleven week old Christian Democrat minority government.

    Signor Moro's government was Italy's 38th since 1973.

Italians were given a bitter taste of what to expect in the coming weeks when a wave of politically motivated terror throughout the country accompanied the dramatic power struggle in Rome.

During the final formalities of signing the decree Signor Moro remained quiet and left the palace without making any statements.
