  • Description

World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Muhammad Ali and the challenging European Champion, Joe Bugner, have been sparing no effort in their training for the title in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 1 July.

Between rigorous training sessions, the two fighters have been waging a verbal war...both Muhammad Ali and Britain's Joe Bugner are confident of winning.

During training sessions at the Negara Stadium, boxing fans and newsmen listened to the fighters slinging insults at each other as they sparred with different partners.

Joe Bugner has been sparring with Sweden's Bjorn Rudi and American Pat Duncan...Muhammad Ali with Levi ??? and Jimmy Ellis, a former world Champion.

Ali lived up to his showman's reputations. During a sparring session he spoke loudly to the audience in the ring. He said Bugner had a lot of nerve even to show up for the fight: "It takes a brave man to get into the ring with me," he said.

Ali admitted that at 33 he's nearing the end of his reign, but also eight years his junior. He dismissed the idea of an early retirement saying: "After this fight It's gonna whip Joe Frazier in about four months and after I've whipped Joe Frazier I'm gonna whip George Foreman. I have to beat those two again."
Joe bugner has been equally confident. He said he was already fully ready to collect the title from Ali who was coming to the end of the road: "My last seven years in boxing is my apprenticeship towards the World Crown," he said. He added that he was not looking for a knockout victory but a win on points.

Ali will get two and a half million American dollars and Bugner half a million from the fight.

The fight will be staged on the morning of 1 July so it cant be televised live in the United States in the evening.

SYNOPSIS: Training for the World Heavyweight Boxing Title...Muhammad Ali. In Kuala Lumpur the Champion's a national hero, drawing huge crowds to his daily training sessions in the Negara Stadium. Ali's spa???ing no efforts for the fight with European Champion Joe Bugner on the first of July.

Ali's been sparring with Levi Forte and former Champion Jimmy Ellis. He's been living up to his showman's reputation...shouting from the ring between punches. He said Bugner had a nerve just showing up at the ring. Ali admitted at thirty-three he's nearing the end of his reign. But he said he still had enough speed and experience to beat Bugner, eight years his junior.

Ali's been training tirelessly for the title fight...sometimes beginning his workout at dawn. He's dismissed any idea of an early retirement.

Also training in Malaysia...Britain's Joe Bugner. He's equally confident about taking the title. Two years ago, he lost on points to Ali.

His training's included sparring with Swedish Bjorn Rudi and American Pat Duncan. He's boasted he's ready to collect the title from Ali who -- he says -- is coming to the end of the road. He said his last seven years in boxing were his apprenticeship towards the world crown.

Bugner's maintained he has the advantage in Kuala Lumpur. He said a difference of eight years really counts in a humid climate. But Ali's said black men can take the heat better than Europeans. The fight will be worth two-and-a-half-million dollars to Ali and half-a-million to Bugner.
