  • Description

Holland's Fifth Naval Squadron, with flagship 15,892 ton aircraft-carrier "Karel Doorman", visited Hollandia, capital of Dutch New Guinea, Aug 2. "Avengers" and "Seahawks" flew in over the city early in the morning to herald their parent ship's arrival.

Using the thrust of her own planes lined up on the flight deck, the carrier docked without the aid of tugs - a repetition of a drill necessitated by a tugmen's strike in Freemantle, Australia, recently. Later in the day schoolchildren and local tribesmen were invited aboard to look at the wonders of modern ship-construction.

The Fifth Squadron left Holland May 31 and sailed around Africa to Australia; it avoided Indonesian waters and sailed up the east coast of Australia to reach New Guinea; nevertheless, Indonesia protested against this voyage, considering it "a declaration of hostility" since she claims Dutch New Guinea under its title of West Irian. Feeling ran so high in Djakarta that the Dutch Chancery was entered and damaged by protesting demonstrators. However, the Squadron will hold routine manoeuvres in New Guinea waters throughout August. A visit to Japan may follow, and the Squadron will return home via the Straits of Magellan and South America.
