  • Description

Senator Edward Kennedy and other members of the family paid tribute with flowers and graveside prayers to the late President John Kennedy on the tenth anniversary of his assassination in Dallas, Texas, on Thursday (22 November).

Shortly after daybreak, the Senator, carrying loose flowers, led his wife Joan, his sister, Mrs. Pat Lawford, his sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert Kennedy, and about ten of the Kennedy children to the late President's grave on a hillside in Arlington National Cemetery, outside Washington.

There, the family knelt for a few minutes in prayer before scattering their flowers at the foot of the grave.

Then, slowly they moved to the nearby grave of the late Senator Robert Kennedy, the President's brother -- who himself was assassinated in Los Angeles in 1968.

Again the family knelt in prayer and dropped their flowers.

Following the graveside ceremony the family drove to attend a memorial mass in Washington.

Thursday's anniversary coincided with the United States' annual Thanksgiving celebration. Millions of people throughout the country took the opportunity this year to remember their slain President.

Even before the Kennedy family arrived at the graveside, three bouquets of flowers were placed in front of the eternal flame marking President Kennedy's grave. They were sent by his widow, Mrs. Jacqueline Onassis.
