  • Description

Forty miners were killed and six were seriously injured in a pro-dawn explosion at a coal mine near Lens, about 190 kilometres (about 110 miles) north of Paris.

The explosion occurred 15 minutes before the men entered the mine which had been closed for five days over Christmas. It was one of France's worst mining disasters.

There were about 45 men in a gallery 2,000 feet (700 metres) below ground at the Lievin coal field when it was rocked by the explosion. Many of the 30,000 people living in Lievin, near the Belgian border, rushed to the pithead when they heard of the explosion.

Rescue workers and vehicles arriving with coffins had difficulty passing through the crowds of tearful relatives and friends.

President Valery Giscard d'Estaing has ordered a full investigation after sending his Industry Minister, Michel d'Ornano, to the scene.

SYNOPSIS: A coal mine in Lens, about one hundred and ninety kilometres north of Paris, exploded before dawn on Friday. The explosion killed forty miners, and seriously injured six. The explosion occured fifteen minutes after the men entered the mine which had been closed for five days over Christmas. It was one of France's worst mining disasters.

As news of the blast spread through the town, near the Belgian border, relatives and friends flocked to the pithead. Rescue workers and vehicles arriving with coffins had difficulty passing through the crowds of tearful women and children.

There were about forty-five men in a gallery two thousand feet below ground at the Lievin coal field when it was rocked by the explosion. It was thought that it has been caused possibly by a spark that ignited gas or coal dust. President Giscard d'Estaing had ordered a full investigation.
