  • Description

Huge brushfires in Southern California have destroyed more than 150 homes and blackened thousands of acres. High temperatures and fierce, dry winds are spreading the flames despite the efforts of hundreds of firemen.

Thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes taking only a minimum of their belongings with them. Two of the biggest blazes converged in Northern Los Angeles Country. In the hills above the fashionable Malibu Beach more than 400 residents and 200 firemen suffered from burns or from inhaling too much smoke. Many exclusive homes costing up to 100,000 dollars (GBP 35,000) have been destroyed.

College students have joined firemen and residents in fighting the flames and wetting down roofs but often their efforts have been in vain.

With weather experts forecasting more hot and windy weather the end of the fires still not in sight today.
