Background: Rain proved the only obstacle for Richard Petty as he stormed his way to the 161st. Grand National victory of his motor racing career at Long Pond, Pennsylvania on Sunday (4 August).
Petty had a convincing win in the Purolator 500 event for stock cars.
Rain halted the race on the 121st. lap with Bobby Allison in the lead. It was restarted after a one hour 20 minutes delay under a yellow flag. By the 143rd. lap the track had dried out enough for the green flag to appear and five laps later Petty took over the lead from Allison.
It started to rain again with only nine laps remaining and on the 192nd. lap the race was stopped with Petty 18.8 seconds clear. Second place went to Buddy Baker and third to Cale Yarborough.
Petty averaged 115.585 miles per hour (185.9 kilometres per hour) for the 480 miles (772.484 kilometres ???) completed.
