Greek multi-millionairess Christina Onassis married her Russian fiance on Tuesday (1 August) in Moscow. The 27 year-old daughter of the late shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, she was married in a civil ceremony to Sergei Kauzov, ten years her senior at Moscow's Griboyedov Street Palace of Weddings.
SYNOPSIS: The ceremony in the green-painted neo-classical building was closed to all but those closest to the couple, who have spent the past month in virtual hiding to avoid publicity.
Until Tuesday the Soviet media had not reported the impending wedding. But on the day of the wedding Soviet camera crews mixed with Western reporters to try and record one of the most unusual unions Moscow has ever seen.
As far as newsmen could tell there were only 11 names on the guest list.
They included the wife of the Greek Ambassador and a Greek Consular Official. Two Soviet film crews were allowed into the ceremony, but Western reporters had to wait on the street. One of the Soviet journalist present said that Registrar present said that Registrar Klara Lemeshkova urged the couple "to be loyal to each other and tolerant throughout their life together.
When the couple emerged from the half-hour ceremony at the only Registry that is permitted to marry foreigners in Moscow they were mobbed by reporters. Miss Onassis said she "felt fine and very good". It is her third marriage, the bridgegroom's second. He was divorced by mutual consent from his Russian wife earlier this year. Miss Onassis has insisted that her move to Moscow will have no effect on the running of her late father's shipping organisation. Her husband left his job with the tanker division of the giant Soviet State freight organisation "Sovfrakht" earlier this year. The couple met in 1976 when Mr. Kauzov represented Sovfrakht in Paris. During the wedding ceremony the Registrar told Mr. Kauzov, a long-serving Communist Party Member, "wherever you live, do not forget your Soviet motherland." The couple will honeymoon at a resort near Lake Baikal in the wilds of Central Siberia. Miss Onassis will share a small apartment with her husband and mother-in-law and has said she is starting a new life as a Moscow housewife.
