    The President of the World Bank, Mr. Robert McNamara, has been holding talks in Beirut on financial matters relating to the bank's recent borrowing of 75-million Lebanese pounds (GBP10 million sterling) from Lebanon.

    Mr. McNamara arrived in Beirut on Wednesday (7 February) for a two-day visit. He is expected to go on to several other Middle-East countries, including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, and a number of Arab countries in North Africa.

    Mr. McNamara was met at the airport by senior Government Ministers, including Finance Minister Fuad Naffah and Information Minister Katchik Babikian.

    He told newsmen that since 1968, the World Bank had borrowed $U.S.400-million from Middle East countries. The latest was a 75-million Lebanese pounds ($U.S.24-million) loan from the Lebanese Government.

    During the same period, the bank had provided $U.S.1,000-million for more than 60 projects in II Arab nations. This was four times the amount of aid to Middle East countries in the previous five years.

    Mr. McNamara said that during his stay he would be particularly interested in learning details of Lebanon's six-year development programme and the investment for projects in it.

    Mr. McNamara told newsmen that in the past five years, the World Bank had borrowed four-hundred million U.S. dollars from Middle East countries. During the same period, the bank had provided one-thousand-million U.S. dollars for more than sixty projects in eleven Arab nations. While in Lebanon, he would be obtaining details of the country's six-year development programme.
