  • Description

Hundreds of yachts from around the world have been gathering at Cowes on the Isle of Wight on Britain's South coast for the start of the Annual Cowes Week competitions which include the Admiral's Cup.

SYNOPSIS: Yachts from 18 nations will compete in this year's Cowes Week. With each country providing three craft in the One Ton class there are at least one million pounds (US 1.7 million) worth of competitor's boats in the waters around the Isle of Wight.

Cowes Week is one of the most prestigious international events and has become even more important with the inclusion of the Admiral's Cup.

Great Britain is the defending champion with tough competition this year coming from Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, West Germany and France.

The West German crew is expected to make it a hard fight particularly if the weather is rough.

All gear must be checked carefully, for when the weather gets rough, a faulty winch or a frayed stay could make the difference of surviving, let alone winning.

The Admiral's Cup-although the highlight of this year's Cowes Weak, is but one of many races. Yachts range in size from Dragon Class to the big ketches, and on at least one occasion, about five hundred yachts will be at sea at the same time. The Admiral's Cup will include three inshore races and one in Atlantic waters to the Fastnet Rock off southern Ireland and return to Plymouth. It's a race that can take from six days to two weeks depending on the weather.

The Cowes Week competition is being organised from the Royal Yacht Squadron headquarters on the Isle of Wight. It provides a spectacular sight for the tourist and the yachting enthusiast.
