  • Description

Ghana's Head of State, Colonel Ignatius Acheampong, has accused the western press of biased reporting about Ghana.

Speaking at a news conference to mark the fourth anniversary of military rule, he praised the eastern press for writing objectively about events in the country.

He criticised Ghanaian journalists and blamed them for allegedly helping the western press in their unfair reporting.

He said the foreign press did not want any developing country to come up to their standard and "if they can use you to destroy your own country, so much the better for them".

Colonel Acheampong said the Government would accept criticism, but journalists must realise that if the country collapsed it would affect them too.

Colonel Acheampong led a military coup to topple Doctor Kofi Busia's Progress Party from office on 13 January, 1972.

He also told the delegates that the military leaders were preparing a programme for returning the country to civilian rule. But no deadline for this had yet been set and details would be published as soon as the programme was completed.

When he took over the leadership, the Government suspended the constitution, dissolved parliament, abolished the presidency and banned political parties which existed before the coup.
