  • Description

JAPANESE RUNNER SEIJI FUKADA WON THE 26-MINE (42 KILOMETRES) KYOTO MARATHON LAST SUNDAY (MARCH 9) WITH A TIME OF 2 HOURS 17 MINUTES 43.5 SECONDS.

THE WEATHER AT THE START OF THE RACE WAS CLOUDY AND THE TEMPERATURE WAS LOW. MORE THAN 100 RUNNERS STARTED FROM THE KYOTO CITY STADIUM OVER A PAVED COURSE, SUPERVISED BY MORE THAN 1000 POLICEMEN AND OFFICIALS OF THE KYOTO ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION. TWO SOUTH KOREAN RUNNERS WERE INVITED TO COMPETE IN THIS YEARS'S MARATHON AND A PRE-RACE FAVOURITE, BRIAN KILBY OF BRITAIN.

KILBY GOT OFF TO A GOOD START WITH THE MAIN BUNCH BUT AFTER 15 MILES (25 KMS) HAD TO WITHDRAW WITH SEVERE STOMACH CRAMPS. HE WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL BUT LATER ALLOWED TO LEAVE.

FUKADA, A VIRTUALLY UNKNOWN RUNNER, LED FROM JUST AFTER THE HALFWAY MARK. HIS WINNING TIME WAS A RECORD FOR THE EVENT. JAPANESE RUNNERS YUTAKA AOKI AND SHINICHI SADANGA FILLED SECOND AND THIRD PLACES RESPECTIVELY, AND SOUTH KOREAN JUNG CHI KIM WAS FOURTH.
