    A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN WAS ONE OF SIX REPORTERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS ARRESTED IN JOHANNESBURG YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WHILE COVERING AN ANTI-GOVERNMENT DEMONSTRATION NEAR POLICE HEADQUARTERS.HE IS CHARLES CHANNON, WHO, WITH FIVE OTHERS, WAS REMANDED ON BAIL TODAY CHARGED UNDER THE PRISONS ACT.

    THEY WERE ARRESTED OUTSIDE THE MARSHALL SQUARE POLICE HEADQUARTERS AFTER COVERING A DEMONSTRATION BY ABOUT 20 INDIAN WOMAN AND CHILDREN AGAINST THE "NO TRIAL" ACT, WHICH ALLOWS PEOPLE TO BE DETAINED WITHOUT TRAIL FOR UP TO 90 DAYS.

    THE PRISONS ACT FORBIDS THE PHOTOGRAPHING OF A PRISON OR PORTION OF A PRISON - POLICE HEADQUARTERS HAVE CELLS.MAXIMUM PENALTY IS GBP100 FINE OR A YEAR'S JAIL.THOSE ARRESTED WERE RELEASED AFTER TWO HOURS' INTERROGATION.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS - ONE A WOMAN OF 70 - WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE DETENTION OF RELATIONS.SOME CARRIED PLACARDS READING: "FREE MY SON" AND "I WANT MY DADDY".THEY TOOK FOOD AND DRINK TO POLICE HEADQUARTERS, WHERE, IT IS BELIEVED, THEIR RELATIONS ARE HELD.THE DEMONSTRATION PASSED OFF PEACEFULLY.
