  • Description

AMERICA'S DEFENCE DEPARTMENT SAYS RUSSIA HAS REMOVED 42 MISSILES FROM CUBA. BUT THE DEPARTMENT SAYS IT CANNOT BE SURE THAT ALL MISSILES HAVE BEEN REMOVED WITHOUT AN 'ON THE SITE' INSPECTION.

MEANWHILE, THE AIR AND SEA CHECK OF THE MISSILE REMOVAL CONTINUES. THESE ARE THE FIRST FILMS, TAKEN FROM A NAVY PATROL PLANE, OF THE INTERCEPTION OF A RUSSIAN FREIGHTER CARRYING MISSILES BY A U.S. NAVY DESTROYER. THE FREIGHTER WAS THE 'ANOSOV', STOPPED BY THE AMERICAN DESTROYER 'BARRY', ABOUT 780 MILES NORTHWEST OF PUERTO RICO, EARLY LAST SATURDAY.

THE FREIGHTER'S CAPTAIN PULLED AWAY THE SHROUD FROM THE REAR OF TWO OF THE EIGHT MISSILE-SHAPED OBJECTS ON DECK. HE REFUSED TO UNCOVER THE OTHERS. THE RUSSIANS DID NOT COMPLY WITH THE DESTROYER CAPTAIN'S REQUEST TO UNCOVER ALL THE CANVAS-SHROUDED OBJECTS.

THE DESTROYER FIRST MADE THE REQUEST WHILE ON THE STARBOARD BEAM OF THE 'ANOSOV'. LATER, HE HOVE TO THE PORT BEAM AND STAYED THERE FOR FOUR HOURS, UNTIL U.S. AUTHORITIES PERMITTED THE 'ANOSOV' TO CONTINUE WITHOUT ENSHROUDING THE REMAINING MISSILES.

LATER THAT DAY, THE DESTROYER 'VESOLE' INTERCEPTED ANOTHER RUSSIAN FREIGHTER, THE 'POLZUNOV', AND DETECTED FIVE CANVAS-SHROUDED MISSILE SHAPES ON THE CARGO SHIP'S DECK. THIS OCCURRED ABOUT 100 MILES EAST NORTHEAST OF HAVANA.
