  • Description

The Venezuelan capital, Caracas has been blanketed by a cloud of smoke in recent days and some reports suggest the fire causing it may have been started deliberately...for political reasons.

SYNOPSIS: The smoke hanging in the sky above Caracas comes from a rubbish dump nearby. It has been catching fire a lot recently, covering the city in a heavy pall of smoke. The latest smoke screen lasted for four days and could be seen almost throughout the city, blanketing highways, buildings and even moving into the area near the airport.

Officials are divided on the cause of the fire. Some say it is occurring spontaneously because of combustible materials, but others say the fires are being started deliberately to disrupt the country's presidential election campaign. Attempts to control it are ineffective. Trucks have been dumping earth over the flames and even chemicals have been used. But nothing seems to be working.
