  • Description

In Dacca, capital of bangladesh, a big industrial fair has opened. Its aim, say officials, is to attract interest from the international market in the nation's growing industrial output.

SYNOPSIS: The fair will continue for two months, and bangladesh has invited officials, businessmen and trade delegations from all over the world to attend. The aim is to interest the world in buying bangladesh's industrial products.

Bangladesh currently earns nearly 400 million dollars a year from exports, mainly of jute, tea, hides, skin and newsprint. The fair aims to expand the focus to newer, non-traditional items, like these household goods.

But there was still a place for products traditionally associated with the East, such as these brightly-coloured textiles. Bangladesh's President, General Ziaur Rahman, said in a recent speech-that his country is moving from economic dependence to economic independence. One of the primary areas in which the country plans to eliminate its economic dependence on the international community is by expanding its export market, especially of newer industrial products.

At present, Bangladesh depends on considerable foreign aid. But economic experts believe this could change with the growth of exports like the sort of newer industrial products on show at the fair, and a major rural development programme that is already underway.
