The Sitalakhya River Bridge - the largest in Bangladesh - has been officially opened. The bridge forms part of the major Asian Highway road link, and cuts considerably the travelling time between Dacca and the port of Chittagong.
SYNOPSIS: President Ziaur Rahman travelled the 10 miles (16 kilometres) to Katchpur, which lies to the south-east of the capital. During the formal opening ceremony, President Zia said the new bridge would greatly help the country's communication system. In a message to the local and foreign engineers employed on the project, he said they deserved commendation from everyone. And, he said, he hoped the bridge would promote the welfare of the people of Bangladesh.
The bridge was built by a Japanese joint-venture company with an American firm of consulting engineers. It's 1,300 feet (397 metres) long and it was built with a 22.5 million dollar loan from the International Development Association, and part of another loan of another 25 millions, also from the IDA, for the bangladesh Highway Project.
