  • Description

British Asians in Uganda have begun to get their travel documents in order against the day when they will have to leave Uganda under president Idi Amin's expulsion order.

On Wednesday (9 August), President Amin announced that he had signed a decree revoking the entry and residence permits of Asians who were not Ugandan citizens.

President Amin's statement followed talks in Kampala with the British High Commissioner, Mr. Richard Slater, the Indian and Pakistan envoys and leaders of the Asian community. The British Government had tried to strike a compromise on the issue.

President Amin said the British Asians and nationals from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh would be given ninety days to leave the country.

He made an exception for doctors, dentists, lawyers, owners of industrial and agricultural enterprises and certain other professional people.

President Amin said if the Asians affected by the decree were not out of Uganda within the ninety day deadline, they would be 'sitting on a fire'.

The British Government has set up a special group of Ministers and officials to deal with the situation. Estimates of the number of people involved vary from 40,000 to 80,000.

Meanwhile, there have been long queues of British Asians at the City Council Health Centre in Kampala. The Asians have come from throughout Uganda and health officials have been working overtime to cope with the demand.
