  • Description

The Congo's President, Marien Ngouabi, on Saturday (20 November) opened the first conference of the Congolese Workers Party, at the Town Hall in Brazzaville.

SYNOPSIS: President Ngouabi formed the party last year, but in December dissolved the central committee, because of the failure of its economic and social policies. The committee was replaced by an interim provisional revolutionary government, headed by Commandant Louis Sylvain Goma. One of the main objects of the conference was to prepare documents for the third Party Congress, which will allow the establishment of a politbureau.

In March this year President Ngouabi denounced the reactionary attitude of certain party members, notably trade union leaders. He accused them of taking part in manoeuvres incompatible with national morale by trying to call a national strike. On Saturday at the conference attended by more than 300 delegates from around the country, the President sternly reproached members of the party and the central committee who had betrayed the party's ideals. But he said there was no question of the conference "washing dirty linen" in public.
