INTRODUCTION: The French national soccer team sprang something of a surprise when they defeated World Cup holders West Germany 1-0 in a friendly match in Paris on Wednesday (23 February) night. 46,000 people saw France's Olivier Rouyer score the game's lone goal in the 52nd minute.

SYNOPSIS: The French, wearing the traditional blue strip, began attacking immediately. The French players -- with an average age of 24 -- are relatively untried in international football. However, in the past few months they've achieved a 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland and a 2-2 away draw with Bulgaria in World Cup qualifying matches.

The West Germans, captained by midfield general Franz Beckenbauer (in the number 5 shirt), locked composed, but the French attackers and defenders weren't allowing their opponents' reputation to overawe them.

They continued playing open, attacking football and were rewarded with several deep thrusts into West German territory. The West Germans tried to play measured football against a French team who challenged every ball and created more scoring opportunities.

The French displayed great enthusiasm, but sometimes this proved a disadvantage when they lost control in scoring positions.

On occasions, they ruined chances purely through inexperience.

At half-time the score remained locked at nil-nil.

The French started the second half in much the same manner as they finished the first.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 52nd minute.

Continual pressure on West German goalkeeper Sepp Maier saw Dominique Bathenay's shot rebound off a post. Olivier Rouyer volleyed the rebound into the corner of the net.

The goal sealed France's first victory over West Germany in ten years.
