  • Description

Celebrations on the Tenth Anniversary of Malta's independence from Britain on Saturday (21 September),led to clashes between crowds, of rival party supporters in the street of Valetta, the Maltese capital.

At one point, mounted police had to intervene between crowds of people supporting the opposition Nationalist Party, and the followers of Prime Minister Dom Mintoff's Labour Party. Six people were later admitted to hospital, but none were believed to be seriously hurt. Among them was a Nationalist Party Member of Parliament, Mr. Anton Tabone, and a policeman.

Mr. Tabone was injured when the jeep carrying him to a demonstration, was pelted with pieces of iron piping, wood and other missiles. One missile hit him in the face. The policeman was also hit in the face, as he and others tried to keep the rival factions apart.

The differences between the two parties have recently been aggravated because the Labour Ministers and the opposition leaders have ben holding secret talks about a new constitution to replace the present one established by the British at the time of independence in 1964.

The Labour Party maintains that the present independent constitution is a sham imposed by Britain for her own ends. The Party says that real independence will only come when Malta is economically viable and the last foreign serviceman leaves the island.
