Background: Maria Bueno of Brazil and Fred Stolle of Australia won the U.S. National Tennis Championships at Forest Hills on Sunday (Sept. 11). Stolle defeated John Newcombe, also of Australia, in a hard-fought battle, 4-6, 12-10, 6-3, 6-4.
Miss Bueno began weakly against Nancy Richey of the United States, but she recovered before the first set was over and was never in trouble again. She won the first set 6-3 and took the second 6-1.
Newcombe won the first set of his match 4-6. In a dramatic second set, neither man could break the other's service. They battled doggedly for 21 games. Then, in the 22nd game, Stolle cracked Newcombe's serve to take the set 12-10. Newcombe did not score a single point in that final game.
After that, Newcombe fought gamely but could not contain Stolle. As the match progressed, Stolle seemed to get stronger and stronger. He won the third set 6-3 and the final set 6-4
Neither Newcombe nor Stolle were seeded in the tournament.
