  • Description

In the Khmer Republic, an eleven-ship convoy taking supplies to the capital, Phnom Penh, came under fire as it tried to make the trip up the Mekong River.

The convoy was the first to attempt the trip for two weeks and one ship -- the tanker Vira I -- was set on fire. It had been carrying aviation fuel.

In the end, ten ships managed to reach the capital although nine of them suffered damage from Communist fire.

The convoy was held up for a while as United States aircraft bombed Communist positions on the bank of the river. It originally consisted of four tankers, four cargo ships and three tugs.
