  • Description

100,000 PEOPLE WERE VACCINATED ON THE COTE D'AZURE YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF A MENTON WOMAN FROM AN ILLNESS WHICH SHOWED CERTAIN SYMPTOMS USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH SMALLPOX.

THE RESULTS OF POST MORTEM TESTS ARE NOT YET KNOWN, BUT THE SUSPICION THAT SMALLPOX WAS THE CAUSE OF DEATH LED TO A RUN ON LOCAL VACCINATION CENTRES.

THE VICTIM OF THE MYSTERY ILLNESS -- A 59-YEAR-OLD OFFICE CLEANER -- WAS ADMITTED TO THE PASTEUR HOSPITAL AT NICE ON MONDAY AND DIED THE SAME DAY. DOCTORS IMMEDIATELY ORDERED CLINICAL TESTS, BUT THE RESULTS WILL NOT BE KNOWN UNTIL TODAY (THURSDAY).

IN THE MEANTIME, THE DEAD WOMAN'S FAMILY WERE PUT UNDER OBSERVATION IN MENTON HOSPITAL AND EVERYONE WHO HAD BEEN IN TOUCH WITH HER IN THE HOSPITAL AND ELSEWHERE, DURING AND AFTER HER FINAL ILLNESS, WAS VACCINATED ON THE SPOT. THE NEWS SPREAD THROUGH THE TOWN AND BEYOND, AND CROWDS OF ANXIOUS PEOPLE FLOCKED TO THE HOSPITALS TO BE VACCINATED. IN ONE, AT NICE, 400 PEOPLE JOSTLED FOR VACCINE JABS.

IF SMALLPOX IS PROVED TO HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE OF THE WOMAN'S DEATH, THE WHOLE COTE D'AZURE WILL HAVE TO BE ISOLATED. REPORTS STATE THAT ALL AIRPORTS, STATIONS, ROADS ETC. WOULD HAVE TO BE CLOSED FOR TWO WEEKS, AND PEOPLE WOULD HAVE TO REMAIN WITHIN THE AREA UNTIL CLEARED BY HEALTH AUTHORITIES.

BUT FOR THE TIME BEING, THE SUSPICION OF SMALLPOX REMAINS UNCONFIRMED -- ALTHOUGH THE WIDESPREAD ANXIETY IT IS CAUSING IS UNDERSTANDABLE.
