Background: More than ten thousand people from all walks of life attended a rally in Peking on March 5th, to give a big welcome to the President of Pakistan, Field Marshal Ayub Khan.
Chairman Liu Shao-chi, Premier Chou En-lai and Vice Premier Chen Yi were among those present.
Addressing the rally, Peking's Mayor Peng Chen warmly acclaimed the achievements scored by Pakistan under the leadership of President Ayub Khan and the new developments in the friendly relations between China and Pakistan in recent years. The Chinese people, he says, will forever march forward hand in hand with the Pakistan people in a concerted struggle to oppose imperialism, colonialism and neo-colonialism, consolidate their respective national independence, strengthen Asian-African solidarity and safeguard world peace.
The President declares: We are united by a common determination to eradicate the last vestiges of imperialism and colonialism in all their forms from the continents of Asia, Africa and Latin America. He continues: friendship with China is for us a long-term policy and not a matter of expediency. As neighbouring states, we are committed tot he observance of the ten principles of peace and friendly cooperation annunciated in Bandung in 1955.
A banner was presented to President Ayub Khan by Mayor Peng Chen on behalf of the people of Peking.
Following the rally, Peking cultural workers performed musical and dance programmes of China and Pakistan and excerpts from 'The East is Red' - a pageant of China's revolution.
