  • Description

Argentine President Maria Estela Peron has vetoed ??? rises of more than 100 per cent negotiated by major trade unions and ordered on all round increase of 50 per cent, backdated to 1 June.

Speaking in a 20-minute nationwide broadcast on Saturday (28 June), the President said there would be further rises of 15 per cent on 1 October and 1 January.

Her decision is expected to spark off further clashes with the country's powerful General Labour Confederation (CGT) which last Friday called for a general strike and staged a mass demonstration demanding immediate payment of the higher increases -- negotiated in private agreements with employers following a 50 per cent devaluation of the peso.

President Peron said higher increases at this time would lead to even greater inflation and unemployment. The country is experiencing an economic crisis, Senora Peron added. She pledged that the government would take measures to control prices and eliminate black-market operations.

She said she was ordering a 100 per cent increase in family allowances to help lower-income families.

Her action has also come under attack by senators of her ruling Justicialist (Peronist) Party. Many senators have announced their support for the CGT in its campaign to have the freely-negotiated increases paid in full.
