  • Description

Cambodian Deputy Premier Ieng Sary arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday (28 October) for the first official talks with neighbouring Thailand since the Khmer Rouge victory six months ago. He said that Cambodian wanted to maintain peace with Thailand.

He flew in from Phnom Penh for a five-day visit and was greeted by Thai Foreign Minister Chatichai Choonhavan.

Mr. Ieng Sary said in a statement, "I bring friendship from the Cambodian people to the people of Thailand. Our people want to live in peace for a long time with every country, and particularly their neighbours".

He is one of the top leaders of the Khmer rouge movement and the man in charge of Cambodia's foreign affairs. He was to have talks with both the Foreign Minister and Prime Minister Kukrit Pramoj.

Thailand, long with other Southeast Asian nations, recognised the new authorities in Phnom Penh soon after they routed the former pro-American regime of Marshal Lon No1, which Thailand had supported during the five-year Cambodian war.

Mr. Chatichai said he intended raising the question of what it to happen to more than 10,000 Cambodian refugees who fled into Thailand after the Khmer Rouge take-over and are living in cams near the border.
