Background: Pakistan and part of Kashmir were paralysed by a general strike called by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on Friday (February 28) in protest against India's agreement. With Kashmiri leader Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah.
The one day strike closed Government offices, courts, schools, banks, factories and most shops in the three major centres, Karachi, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
There was no indication of the effects of the strike in Indian held Kashmir.
Mr. Bhutto called on the people of Pakistan and the whole of Kashmir to strike as a demonstration that Sheikh Abdullah's agreement with India could not deprive the six million Kashmiris of their right of self determination. The Sheikh was restored to power in Kashmir by India this week after committing that part of the Himalayan state to Indian sovereignty.
