TEAR-GAS BILLOWED AS THE EX-SERVICEMEN, CAMPAIGNING FOR A BETTER DEAL FROM THE GOVERNMENT, TRIED TO PUSH PAST BARBED-WIRE BARRICADES BLOCKING THE APPROACHES TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING.

ABOUT SIXTY OF THE VETERANS - ON CRUTCHES, HOBBLING ON ARTIFICIAL LIMBS OR PROPELLING THEMSELVES IN WHEELCHAIRS -- PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS FROM THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IN ANOTHER BID TO GET BETTER HOUSING AND CONDITIONS.

STUDENTS, WHO HAVE BEEN AGITATING AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT FOR DIFFERENT REASONS, JOINED IN AND SEVERAL THREATENED TO COMMIT SUICIDE OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT.

ARMED RIOT POLICE SEALED OFF THE AREA AROUND THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING AND REFUSED TO ALLOW THE DEMONSTRATORS PAST.

WHEN THE ANGRY VETERANS BEGAN PICKING UP ROCKS AND STONES, THE POLICE OPENED FIRE WITH TEAR-GAS CANISTERS. THE ACRID SMOKE BILLOWED ACROSS THE SQUARE, ENVELOPING LUNCHTIME CROWDS.

TWO CRIPPLED DEMONSTRATORS WHO COLLAPSED WERE CONSOLED BY PASSERS-BY AS POLICE BATHED THEIR SMARTING EYES IN A PUBLIC FOUNTAIN. BUT THE DEMONSTRATORS SAID THEY DIDN'T WANT CONSOLATION ONLY A BETTER DEAL FROM THE GOVERNMENT.
