• Short Summary

IN BRITAIN, THE NEW CONSERVATION PARTY LEADER, MR.EDWARD HEATH WAS FORMALLY APPOINTED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) IN?

  • Description

HEATH GREETED AT PARTY HEADQUARTERS; SOF EXTRACT OF FIRST INTERVIEW AS PARTY LEADER ON BRITAIN'S CURRENT ECONOMIC CRISIS.

HEATH - SO MANY OF THE GOVERNMENT'S PRESENT TROUBLES FLOW FROM THE FACT THAT THEY LOST THE CONFIDENCE OF THE WORLD LAST NOVEMBER. SINCE THEN THEY HAVE TAKEN A SERIES OF INDEPENDENT MEASURES TO TRY TO DEAL WITH IT. NONE OF THEM SO FAR HAVE BEEN EFFECTIVE AND NOW THE CHANCELLOR HAS BEEN FORCED TO TAKE NEW MEASURES YESTERDAY. YET ONLY TEN DAYS AGO, HE WAS SAYING HE WAS NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING FURTHER.

QUESTION: IF YOU SAY THE GOVERNMENT LOST THE CONFIDENCE IN NOVEMBER, YOU MUST TELL ME IN WHAT WAY YOU THINK THEY LOST CONFIDENCE?

HEATH: I THINK THEY LOST THE CONFIDENCE TO THE WORLD, FIRST OF ALL BECAUSE THEY EXAGGERATED WHAT THEY CALLED THE 800 MILLIONS TRADE DEFICIT WHEN THEY CAME INTO POWER. THE SAME TIME THEY SAID NO FURTHER MEASURES WERE NECESSARY TO DEAL WITH OUR ECONOMIC SITUATION, AND AS A RESULT OF EXAGGERATING THIS, FOR POLITICAL REASONS, TO TRY AND DAMN THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY, THEY CREATED A FALSE IMPRESSION ABROAD. THEN WITH THE HANDLING OF THE 15 PER CENT. SURCHARGES, THE BUDGET WHICH MANY PEOPLE THOUGHT AT THAT TIME WAS IRRELEVANT, AND THEN THE SUDDEN PANIC IMPOSITION OF THE SEVEN PER CENT. BANK RATE, THEY MADE PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY DIDN'T REALLY KNOW HOW TO HANDLE AFFAIRS AND THEN CONFIDENCE EBBED AWAY.

QUESTION: DO YOU THINK THERE WAS A CHOICE THEN BETWEEN THESE MEASURES YESTERDAY AND DEVALUATION?

HEATH: OR I WOULDN'T PUT IT AS BLUNTLY AS THAT. I THINK THIS GOVERNMENT WILL DO EVERYTHING IT CAN TO MAINTAIN THE VALUE OF THE POUND. BUT WHAT THEY EVIDENTLY THOUGHT WAS NECESSARY WAS TO TAKE MEASURES WHICH THEY THOUGHT WOULD HELP TO RESTORE CONFIDENCE ABROAD.
