  • Description

PEOPLE LIVING IN TRIBAL VILLAGES ALONG THE RUFIJI RIVER VALLEY IN TANZANIA HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES AND SETTLE IN OTHER AREAS ABOVE THE VALLEY. THE WARNING HAS BEEN GIVEN AFTER YEARS OF DEVASTATION CAUSED BY FLOODING.

EACH YEAR THE VALLEY IS INUNDATED WHEN THE 'WET' SEASON BEGINS, AND EVERY YEAR GOVERNMENT RELIEF AND RESCUE TEAMS ARE CALLED IN TO ASSIST THE VILLAGERS IN THE PLIGHT RESULTING FROM THE FLOODS.

AT LEAST 51-THOUSAND PEOPLE LIVE ALONG THE VALLEY, IN 90 SCATTERED VILLAGES. THEY MOSTLY BELONG TO THE WARUFIJI TRIBE.

THE TANZANIAN GOVERNMENT HAS NOW GIVEN THE TRIBES PEOPLE SIX MONTHS TO QUIT FLOOD-PRONE AREAS OF THE VALLEY. THEY HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO RE-SETTLE IN VILLAGES ABOVE THE VALLEY.

THE ANNUAL FLOODING BRINGS HARDSHIP TO THE TRIBES PEOPLE, AND CREATES EXPENSE FOR THE GOVERNMENT IN ARRANGING RELIEF AN RESCUE WORK. THE FLOODING COMMENCED WEEKS EARLIER THAN USUAL THIS, YEAR ADDING TO THE HARDSHIP OF LAST YEAR.
