  • Description

Soviet cosmonauts Yuri Romanenko and Georgy Grechko said in Moscow on Tuesday (11 April) that they had initial difficulty in standing upright after returning to earth last month from a record 96 days in space. "Of course out legs did not hold up", engineer Grechko said when the two men made their first public appearance since landing on March 16.

SYNOPSIS: Earlier, Romanenko and Grachko and two of the other four cosmonauts who took part in the mission-Alexei Gubarev and Captain Vladimir Remek, of Czechoslovakia-were cheered by crowds when they visited the town of Zvjozdnyj near Moscow. The space training centre is situated in this town.

Captain Remek said he was satisfied with the food aboard Salyut-6, apart from one thing-there was no beer.

Flight engineer Grechko said they had seen two Sputniks during the voyage, but no flying saucers. "Personally I don't believe in flying saucers", he said.

At the Yuri Gagarin Monument the cosmonauts laid wreaths in a tribute to the first man to tribute to the first man to travel into space. It was on April 12, 1961 what Gagarin made his epic voyage in his Vostok I spacecraft. Unlike these men, who spent more than three months in space, Gagarin returned to earth after orbiting it once in one hour 29 minutes.
