  • Description

The World Boxing Association Junior Lightweight Champion Kuniaki Shibata of Japan scored two final-round knockdowns to scrape a narrow points win over Argentina's Victor Echegary in Tokyo on Tuesday night (19 June).

Shibata retained his title after fourteen rounds of defensive boxing. Echegary -- relying exclusively on a powerful and damaging left jab throughout the fight -- had the Japanese champion dancing and retreating from him for almost every round.

But two left hooks to the stomach put the challenger onto the canvas twice in the fifteenth and final round for mandatory counts of eight, despite his protests to the referee that he was pushed and not knocked down.

The Japanese referee and judges gave the decision to Shibata, although sports commentators watching the fight said afterwards that in two cases, the scoring did not appear to accurately reflect what was a very close contest.

Shibata, the former World Featherweight Champion, was defending the heavier title for the first time since winning it from Ben Villaflor of the Philippines in Honolulu last March.

SYNOPSIS: In Tokyo, a big crowd turned out on Tuesday night for the World Boxing Association Junior Lightweight title fight. Argentina's Victor Echegary was attempting to take the title from Kuniaki Shibata of Japan.

Echegary -- relying exclusively on a powerful and damaging left jab throughout the fight -- had the Japanese champion dancing and retreating away from him for almost every round.

Shibata, the former World Featherweight Champion, was defending the heavier title for the first time since he won it from Ben Villaflor of the Philippines in Honolulu last March.

For the first fourteen rounds, the Japanese champion was relying heavily on defensive skills to keep off Echegary's attack. But two left hooks to the stomach put the Argentinean to the canvas twice in the fifteenth and final round, for the mandatory count of eight. Echegary protested to the referee that he was pushed and not knocked down.

The final round was decisive with Shibata picking up confidence in the final moments.

The decision went to Shibata, even though sports commentators watching the fight said later the scoring did not appear to accurately reflect the very close contest with Echegary.
