    M. Michael Debre, French Prime Minister, laid a ceremonial wreath on the war memorial in?

  • Description

    M. Michael Debre, French Prime Minister, laid a ceremonial wreath on the war memorial in Algiers Feb 9. It was the second day of his three-day visit to Algeria where he is having talks with military and political leaders.

Hostile groups of young settlers in a crowd of 2,000 gathered round the memorial, shouting abuse during the ceremony. Fanatical youths screamed "Algeria is French" and clamoured for the execution of Ben Bella, captured rebel leader whom President de Gaulle released from prison and placed under house arrest. Others shouted: "The Army is with us" and "Vive Massu".

These outbursts have been interpreted as part of the present wave of anti-Government hostility in Algiers. Extremist settlers are terrified that President de Gaulle plants to end the Algerian war by political means through negotiations with the rebels.

On his arrival in Algiers Feb 8 M. Debre confirmed "France will remain in Algeria!"
