  • Description

It is six months since Israeli troops pulled back to the agreed peaceline in the Sinai desert -- withdrawing from positions held since last year's October war with Egypt.

Now, solitary United Nations' soldiers sit in observation posts placed at intervals on both sides of the U.N. buffer zone.

Every afternoon a U.N. jeep comes across the desert carrying an officer and a fresh guard. The Swedish contingent of the U.N. troops in Sinai always go through an elaborate changing of the guard ceremony watched by an officer and a handful of Israeli soldiers. Any Swedish soldier not performing the changeover strictly to regulations is in danger of being disciplined.

Only the signpost outside U.N. camp "Rubber" announcing the frontier and prohibiting entrance reminds that two powerful armies are still facing one another in Sinai. A few miles inside the second belt of the disengagement line on the Israeli side new M60 tanks cross the desert on regular patrol. Still further back Israeli 175mm guns -- which saw much action on the northern front against Syria -- are kept ready for action by Israeli artillerymen.
