The Olympic flame, symbol of the ancient games in Greece, was transmitted by laser beam from Athens to Ottawa according to plan on Thursday (15 July).

SYNOPSIS: Canadian government officials, athletes, well-wishers and others waited patiently on they lush lawns of Ottawa's parliamentary complex to witness the occasion. It was the first time in history that the sacred flame was not transported by sea or air to the site of the Olympic games. A fraction of a second after the flame was dipped towards a sensor in Athens, it leapt to life in a simple metal urn as it was transmitted electronically.

As the flame leapt to life, a pretty local teenager, Liz Street, lit the first torch and handed it to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. There were cheers as the Prime Minister held the torch high in the air. Security precautions were virtually non-existent during the one-hour ceremony marking the arrival of the flame. Barefooted children and adolescents in shorts freely clambered over the official podium while a lone helicopter circled overhead. There was one moment of anxiety when a machanic in smudged overalls climbed up to the urn on a stepladder 15 minutes before the satellite transmission to hastily repair a faulty part. But when the flame was lit, the crowd, which had broken through rope barriers, jammed the exit from the official podium. The torch bearers had to elbow their way to the street as over-enthusiastic Canadians slapped their backs.

The informality of the ceremony was highlighted when Mr. Trudeau told the guests of honour during his speech that they might as well sit down. Twenty men and women carried the covered flame to the top of Montreal's Mount Royal from where it will be taken into the Olympic stadium for the opening ceremony on Saturday.
