  • Description

One of the largest and most important public sales of paintings by old masters over organised in Italy will open on Thursday at the new Rome showrooms of Christie's, the British fine art auctioneers.

The two-day sale has taken nearly a year to arrange, and during their preparations, the Christie's assessors have located three "lost" major works.

The 600 paintings, drawings and prints will be sold in 480 lots, and are expected to realise about GBP700-thousand Sterling.

The three rare works to be sold are a painting by the seventeenth century artist Guercino of Saint Irene attending the dying Saint Sebastian; a Crucifixion by an early fourteenth century artist, Monte Oliveto Master; and, a hitherto unknown work by Jacob Jordaens, Venus and Adonis, painted in about 1620.

One of the finest and most valuable works to be offered is an early study by Jacopo Bassano, Adoration of the Shepherds, painted about 1550. It is expected to sell for around GBP130-thousand Sterling.
