SYNOPSIS: Africans gathered on Friday in a Kampala street originally named after a pioneering Indian trader to see its name changed to Bokassa Street -- after the visiting President of the Central African Republic.

The ceremony came while President Amin was taking his visitor on a tour of the Ugandan capital.

President Bokassa was making the first state visit by an African head of state since President Amin came to power in a military coup eighteen months ago.

President Amin told the crowd that the change in name from Alidine Vishiram Street to Bokassa Street was very fitting when the economy of Uganda was being transferred into the hands of Africans.

Then President Bokassa used a ceremonial sword to cut a tape re-opening the newly named street.

The street is in the centre of Kampala and is lined by several large Asian-owned shops and offices.

President Amin used the ceremony to issue a warning to Asians that the Government would not accept responsibility for anything that might happen to the property which expelled Asians had not registered before leaving.

He said Asians who planned to lock up their properly would be the losers in the end.

The Ugandan leader's tour through the city with President Bokassa was marked by crowds of Africans who waves and cheered as his car passed.
