  • Description

To combat unemployment in several trades in Toronto the Canadian Bank of Commerce building ---- four hundred and seventy six feet in height, tallest in the British Commonwealth------ is being sandblasted to remove the grime and dirt that has accumulated over the years.

Fifty workers are employed on this mamoth 'face-lifting' operation and it is reckoned to be finished by July. Hanging from the building, like spiders trailing on a single thread, are twenty platforms from which the crews clean the brickwork. Starting from just below the structures famous observation tower the men will work downwards until they reach a point not far from the bottom, then they will change their swaying cradles for more rigid, steel scaffolding.

Apart from providing fifty men with employment, the project will involve the use of a hundred and fifty to two hundred tons of sand, around twenty five thousand gallons of water and between ten and twelve miles of ropes for the scaffolding and cradles.

All day long Toronto people, passing by the building, stare upwards watching the progress of the sandblasters as they manoeuvre their suspended platforms and gradually move nearer the bottom of the Bank.
