  • Description

A 15-nation East and Central African Ministerial conference opened in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday (5 Sept) with an appeal for maximum support for armed struggle against Southern Africa.

The call came in an opening address by Tanzania Vice-President Aboud Jumbe, who said the "white oppressors' violence" must be met with violence.

The 16 nations represented at the conference are known as the "Good Neighbours".

The opening session of the Ministerial meeting was delayed 24 hours because of the prospect of a Ugandan boycott, over strained relations with the host nation, Tanzania. Fears of a total Ugandan boycott were removed by the attendance of two junior Foreign Ministry officials at the first session.

The Ministers discussed matters to be put on an agenda or a Heads of States conference from September 7-9.
