Background: The African Development Bank (BAD) with forty-eight member states on the African continent opened up its new headquarters in Abidjan on Saturday (16 December). The ceremony was attended by the President of the Ivory Coast, Monsieur Felix Houphouet-Boigny.
SYNOPSIS: The new headquarters of the African Development Bank is a modern nineteen storey building in central Abidjan. The opening of the new bank was celebrated with great festivities including performances of traditional African dances. the President of the Ivory Coast, Monsieur Houphouet-Boigny was present to inaugurate the new headquarters.
After it was established in 1963 the Bank was housed in a temporary building. The constitutional conference of the Organisation of African Unity first talked about setting up the bank in 1963. the Finance Ministers of many African countries were involved in discussions about the function of the Bank. Monsieur Houphouet-Boigny met the Bank President, Monsieur Fordwor and other bank officials before cutting the ribbon and officially opening the new building.
The function of the Bank is to contribute to the economic and social development of its member states. The countries plan to work together to study, prepare, finance and implement projects and programmes for the mutual benefit of the African community.
