  • Description

JAMES H. MEREDITH RECEIVED A BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI ON SUNDAY 18 AUGUST IN GRADUATION CEREMONIES AT ITS OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI, CAMPUS. HE THUS BECAME THE FIRST NEGRO EVER TO GRADUATE FROM THE 115-YEAR-OLD SCHOOL.

THE GRADUATION CEREMONIES WENT OFF WITHOUT INCIDENT ONLY 100 YARDS FROM THE SCENE OF THE BLOODY RIOTS THAT ACCOMPANIED MR. MEREDITH'S ADMISSION TO THE UNIVERSITY LAST SEPTEMBER. J.D. WILLIAMS, CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY, PRESENTED DIPLOMAS TO THE THIRTY-YEAR-OLD NEGRO AND TO THE 440 OTHER GRADUATES. THE CEREMONY WAS RELAXED AND INFORMAL.

THE GRADUATES HEARD AN ADDRESS BY JOHN HUNTER, THE PRESIDENT OF LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY. HE SAID THE STATES COMPRISING THE AMERICAN SOUTH HA ALREADY MADE GREAT PROGRESS. "IN SPITE OF CURRENT PROBLEMS, AND IN PART, BECAUSE OF THEM," HE SAID, "THERE EXIST OPPORTUNITIES IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI WHICH NEVER EXISTED BEFORE." HE SAID THE CURRENT GRADUATING CLASS MUST TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED BY CHANGES IN THE SOUTH.

MR. MEREDITH ENTERED THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI AS A TRANSFER STUDENT FROM JACKSON STATE COLLEGE, AN ALL-NEGRO INSTITUTION IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI. REPEATED ATTEMPTS BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO ENROLL HIM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI HAD BEEN REBUFFED. FINALLY A FORCE OF FEDERAL MARSHALS ESCORTED HIM TO THE CAMPUS AND INSISTED THAT HE BE REGISTERED. IN THE DAYS FOLLOWING, THE UNIVERSITY WAS TORN BY RIOTING. NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS AND FEDERAL MARSHALS ESCORTED MR. MEREDITH EVERYWHERE HE WENT. IN THE ENSUING MONTHS, HOWEVER, THE ANTAGONISM DIED DOWN; THE AGITATORS DISAPPEARED AND THE TROOPS AND MOST OF THE MARSHALS WERE WITHDRAWN. SUNDAY'S TRIUMPHANT AND PEACEFUL GRADUATION WAS IN SHARP CONTRAST TO THE EARLIER VIOLENCE.

MR. MEREDITH PLANS TO MOVE OUT OF THE SOUTH TO CONTINUE WORK ON A SCHOLARSHIP FUND THAT HAS BEEN ORGANISED IN HIS NAME.
