Background: The North Vietnamese Defence Minister General Vo Nguyen Giap arrived in Algiers on Sunday (4 January) for "an official visit of friendship".
General Giap embraced a line of Algerian officers waiting to greet him as he left a Soviet Aeroflot jet from Havana where he was attending the first congress of the Cuban Communist Party.
In a brief statement on his arrival General Giap said his visit of several days was intended to strengthen cooperation and friendship between Algeria and Vietnam.
The General is on his first trip abroad since the end of the Vietnam War and his first trip ever outside Asia and Eastern Europe.
On Monday (5 January), he met Algerian President Houari Boumedienne who invited him to visit Algeria. President Boumedienne is also Algeria's Defence Minister.
General Giap, a war hero of Dien Bien Phu and Danang, went to Algiers to express gratitude for Algeria's support in the past. Throughout the Vietnam War, Algeria was a staunch friend to both North and South Vietnam.
