  • Description

Premier Moise Tshombe of the dissident Congo Republic province of Katanga, told assembled newsmen Aug 4, that he was sure United Nations troops would not now be sent into the province Aug 6 as scheduled by UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjoeld.

His statement followed two-and-a-half hours of talks with Dr Ralph Bunche, UN Under Secretary-General, who arrived in Elisabethville earlier the same day from Leopoldville. In view of the present tense situation Dr Bunche's trip had been brought forward a day.

After Premier Tshombe had spoken to the press, United Nations officials quickly issued in a statement in which they emphasised that Dr Bunche had said only that he will report to the Secretary-General on the discussions. "Dr Bunche stated explicitly that he can take no decisions."
In radio messages throughout the province Aug 3, Premier Tshombe ordered general mobilisation of "all able bodied men" to resist the entry of United Nations troops.
