Background: The 1,948-ton Lebanese freighter "Halcyon Med" - bound from North African to Scotland - sank August 24 after collision with the Panamanian tanker "Esso Switzerland" near the Straits of Gibraltar, In response to urgent calls for help from the tanker, the United States transport ship "General Leroy Eltinge" sped to the rescue - manoeuvring through dense fog with the aid of radar - and picked up 26 passengers and crew who had been transferred to the "Esso Switzerland". She then raced to Gibraltar where six injured were taken to hospital.

"Esso Switzerland" remained in the area to search for 3 men reported missing from the merchantman. The forepart of the "Halcyon Med" was still floating and, in the thick fog conditions, represented a particular danger to navigation.

A British Shackleton aircraft from Gibraltar from reported that wreckage from the collision covered 6 square miles.
