Background: VISNEWS filmed Apl 12 the spectacular gondola procession on the Grand Canal, Venice, bearing the embalmed body of Saint Pius Ten - a journey of solemn splendour, Catholic ritual, and memories of a man who like the present Pope was once patriarch of Venice and who was returning home to lie in St. Mark's Basilica for a month.
The body glided on the Bucintoro, the Doge's gilt ceremonial galleon, to be received at St. Mark's Pier by representatives of the Italian Government and by a kneeling crowd and was given military honours.
The gondolas splashed colour in bright sunshine under a blue sky, each decorated with carvings and manned by eight or ten gondoliers in fifteenth-century costume.
At the Pier a new procession was then formed to carry the body to the 900 year old Basilica where it was placed on a silver altar. The burial will take May 10 at St. Peter's where all Popes are buried.
The present Pope, shortly after his election to the Papacy last August, announced he would carry out Pius Ten's dying wish to return to Venice.
Pius Ten was Venice Patriarch for more than ten years. He was Pope 1903-1914.
