  • Description

CHARLIE CHAPLIN'S FIRST FILM FOR NEARLY 10 YEARS HAD ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT LONDON'S CARLTON CINEMA TONIGHT (THURSDAY) - AND THE CRITICS CALLED IT A "FLOP". THE FILM, "A COUNTESS FROM HONG KONG", IS WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY CHAPLIN, WHO ALSO WROTE THE MUSIC, AND STARS MARLON BRANDO, SOPHIA LOREN AND CHAPLIN'S SON, SIDNEY.

THREE OF CHAPLIN'S DAUGHTERS, AND CHAPLIN HIMSELF, MAKE VERY BRIEF APPEARANCES IN THE FILM. NEITHER BRANDO NOR SOPHIA LOREN WAS PRESENT AT THE PREMIERE. THE IDEA OF THE FILM WAS CONCEIVED BY CHAPLIN 30 YEARS AGO. LONDON'S NEWSPAPER FILM CRITICS ALL "PANNED" THE FILM. THE DAILY EXPRESS CRITIC SAID: "WHAT A SHAME, WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT, WHAT A BORE".
