  • Description

A group of eight delegates of the united Nations Decolonisation Committee of 24, arrived yesterday (Thursday) in Addis Ababa during a tour of several African countries. During their stay in Ethiopia, the group - headed by Committee Chairman David Nicol of Sierra Leone - hope to study the literature compiled by the Organisation of African Unity's (OAU) Liberation Committee.

The group is composed of representatives from Ecuador, Ethiopia, India, Italy, Poland, Sierra Leone and Tunisia. During their African tour they are meeting representatives of various liberation movements with a view to producing an analytical study which the UN Committee hoped would speed up decolonisation in Africa and other areas.

During a press conference at the airport, Mr. Nicol appraised his Committee's achievements in the ten years since it was created. He said that in this time some 25 countries had gained independence freeing some 60 million people from "the shackles of colonialism".

The eight-man group arrived from Algeria and, after three days in Ethiopia, will visit Tanzania and Zambia before returning to their UN headquarters.
