    General policies of the Arab National Union as they affect the policies of Jordan were discussed during the second meeting of the Union which opened in Amman on Thursday (29 March).

    The meeting was presided over by the supreme chairman of the Union, Jordan's King Hussein.

    The Union, which was formed in November, 1971, has an Upper Council of 360 members -- 240 of them being elected by voting, and 120 appointed by King Hussein as supreme chairman. A 36-man executive committee also was appointed. Members are from the East and West Bank of the River Jordan.

    Permanent Secretary-General is Mr. Juma'h Hammad, appointed by King Hussein to direct all the Union's affairs.

    King Hussein told members of the union that Israel's modernisation gave it an advantage over the Arab nations.

    He said the Arabs were facing a challenge with Israeli occupation and expansion.

    Secretary-General Mr. Hammad also addressed the meeting.
