  • Description

The Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, held three hours of talks with the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, in Tripoli on Saturday (December 1).

Other members of the Revolutionary Command Council of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation also attended the meeting.

The issues discussed were not disclosed. But correspondents said one topic would almost certainly have been the Arab summit conference at Algiers, which Libya boycotted.

At the summit conference, the Arab nations agreed to recognise the Palestinian Liberation Organisation as the sole representative of the Palestinian people, against the wishes of Jordan's King Hussein.

Libya boycotted the conference because it opposed the October Middle East ceasefire agreement. Since the conference ended, Libyan radio and television has denounced the results as humiliating to the Arab people.

Colonel Gaddafi also recalled his chief mission in Cairo because he said Egypt and Syria had accepted the ceasefire with Israel without consulting him The recall of Mr. Mahmoud Bakkoush and most of his staff from Cairo has cast a shadow on the planned merging of the two countries.
